Chapter twenty

The phone rings for a few seconds before someone picks up. Noah has already informed me that he’s got the signal and is tracing the number. I don’t know how he’s ever acquired the skills he has, but I’m going to give the man a fucking raise if he manages to find Dante from this. Hell, I’d give him a fucking castle to hide in.

“You have him?” Dante’s voice immediately comes through as the line connects.

I hold back the smile before I respond. “Not exactly.” There’s no way he doesn’t know my voice.

“Fuck. I should’ve known better.” I can almost hear the eye roll as he pauses. “It’s nice to hear your voice, Annalise.” He’s attempting to turn on the fake charm that works with so many others. Unfortunately for him, there’s only one man that’s able to turn me into putty with a few words, and it’s not this fucking asshole.

“Call your dogs off. Give yourself up and no one else needs to die.”

Dante laughs down the phone. “If you’re calling me, that means Killian is indisposed. I don’t think you’re currently in the position to make demands…Viper.”

All the blood drains from my face. There is only one person in this entire world who has ever called me Viper. It sure as shit isn’t Dante Santiago. It doesn’t take a genius to work out I’ve got more than one life to protect right now. Liam is Killian’s best friend, the only other person in the world that he cares about apart from me. I can’t let him suffer for the events I set into motion. He doesn’t deserve this. Liam is so fun, full of life, a life I’ll fight to ensure he lives.

“What do you want?” I ask through gritted teeth.

“A truce. You stop hunting me, and I let this annoying little shit go.”

Now I’m struggling not to laugh. I highly doubt that Liam is being a particularly cooperative hostage. I can only imagine the comments flying past his lips at this point. Liam has a particularly…colourful vocabulary at the best of times. While Killian and I appreciate it, I doubt Dante feels the same.

I’ve got a choice to make. Do I admit defeat and hope that Dante lets Liam go? Or do I refuse and risk the lives of everyone around me—Killian included? Not to mention the idea of Dante killing Liam. I don’t think Killian would ever truly come back from that. He might claim he didn’t know how to love until me, but he’s loved Liam for most of his life.

Just before I’m able to agree, Noah’s voice resonates in my ear. “I’ve got him, boss.” That’s all the affirmation I need right now. It won’t solve the situation tonight, but if Dante continues to believe he’s got somewhere to hide, he might just make a mistake that we can capitalise on.

“It was never you I wanted, Dante,” I tell him, surprisingly honest. “I want the man that shot me. Give me him and all this goes away.
